3D Mammography

The future of breast cancer diagnosis

3D mammography technology

What is the 3D Mammography?

The 3D Mammography is a state-of-the-art device that uses X-rays to scan breast tissue. 3D Mammography differs from conventional mammography because it can scan multiple planes of about 1 millimetre, delivering a three-dimensional image of the breast.

As a result, 3D Mammography can detect pathologies with greater precision and sensitivity and rule out injuries or other problems, which may be hidden by greater breast density or overlapping structures. Thus, this equipment is fundamental for the earlier diagnosis of breast cancer and, consequently, a better prognosis for this disease.

How it works

3D Mammography resembles that of a conventional mammography device. The difference is that, in this case, the equipment creates images of the breast from several angles and with millimetre-precision thicknesses. These angles are reconstructed to provide a complete, detailed, three-dimensional representation of the breast, essential for identifying nodules and calcifications more accurately.

Capabilities and benefits

3D Mammography can detect a wider array of tumors than traditional mammography, as a result of multiple images and analyses. This technology has a higher success rate than the conventional equipment, and can detect tiny tumours, with less than 1 centimetre. It is therefore possible to prescribe less invasive oncological therapeutic protocols.

Key benefits of 3D Mammography include:

• Quickly delivers high-definition three-dimensional images, taking an average of 5 to 7 minutes to produce results.

• Better definition of lesions, such as nodules, microcalcification or distortions.

• Less obstruction from overlapping breast tissue.

• Greater comfort for the patient, since breast compression stops automatically after image capture.

• Less potential for additional incidences and, consequently, for exposure to radiation.

• Less invasive procedures.
