Bárbara Campos, Orthopedist and Orthopedics Coordinator at the Clínicas Joaquim Chaves Saúde, explains that “the ACL tear derives from a sprain in the knee, and the recurrent dislocation of the shoulder is caused by forced external abduction and rotation movements. There is often the need for surgical intervention in both injuries, to restore the anatomy and to be able to continue to practice sports”.
The good news is that in both situations, surgery in minimally invasive, done through arthroscopy, a technique which is “least aggressive, allowing for a less painfull postoperative” and a shorter period of hospital admission.
Today, when treating recurrent shoulder instability, the Latarjet surgery is “an extremely efective treatment”. This procedure is done differently at the Clínica Cirúrgica de Carcavelos da Joaquim Chaves Saúde, “by arthroscopy, without opening the joint, using a camera and small incisions called gates”. Complications are “generally rare and not serious, not requiring further surgeries or affecting the final outcome”. As to recovery, it “consists of a short period of immobilisation followed by a rehabilitation program of about four months”.
When doing sports or working out, the shoulders and the knees always seem to suffer the most
Practicing physical activity is one of the main recommendations for living a healthier life, but we should always try to avoid injuries. Two of the most common are the anterior cruciate ligament tear (ACL tear) and the recurrent shoulder instability, and both of them can lead to surgery.
