The equipment can detect the presence of bacteria in the urine sample in just 15 minutes, thus indicating whether the person has a urinary infection.
When the result is positive, this is followed by an antibiotic sensitivity test (AST), which takes another 30 minutes and tests for susceptibility to the following antibiotics:
• Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Acid
• Ciprofloxacin
• Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole
• Fosfomycin
• Nitrofurantoin
It is worth mentioning that the TSA can only include one of the five antibiotics mentioned.
In the case of a sample with positive bacteriuria and antibiotic reporting, the result is expected to be sent by e-mail 90 minutes after the start of the analysis.
After the antibiotic sensitivity test, you will need to see a general practitioner, who will be responsible for prescribing the appropriate antibiotic to treat the infection.
To carry out the test, you just need to go to one of the medical clinics (Clinical Analysis reception) that have this equipment available, without the need for an appointment or prescription. You can also go to a general practitioner to have the test carried out. It should be noted that the test cannot be carried out on patients with complicated urinary tract infections (algalic patients, relevant anatomical or functional abnormalities and kidney disease).
In the event of a negative or inconclusive test result, the sample will be sent to the CORE Laboratory for microbiological analysis using conventional methods, and the final result is expected to be delivered by email within 28 hours of the sample being received in the department.
The test is currently available at the Clínica de Miraflores, Clínica de Cascais, Clínica de Sintra, Clínica Cirúrgica de Carcavelos and Centro Médico de Moscavide.
